Apart from nearly 45 years of membership at Houghton, Richard has represented the club as an amateur at Scratch League and top Amateur golf levels, including both Provincial and National honours, and which included numerous wins on both the local and international amateur stage. Richard then played as a Touring Pro out of the club for some 18 years on Tour, playing on the Sunshine, Asian PGA and Canadian Tours, and winning events in SA, Swaziland, Botswana and Thailand. He also represented SA at the 1999 World Cup of Golf in Kuala Lumpur, and in a year where he also played at Valderrama in the inaugural American Express World Golf Championship.

In 2010, when the revamped Houghton opened, Richard was the Director of Golf, before taking up the shop, and the role of Head Professional, in 2011. Richard joined the Club Committee in 2016 as Vice-Captain of the club, before becoming the Captain in 2017, a position we belive to be unique in acting as both the Club Professional and the Captain of the club. Houghton Golf Club has, and always will be, his second home!
